LiRA project is composed of 5 work packages (WPs) with an overall duration of 42 months (3.5 years). The project starts the 1st of February 2019.
The first three WPs are focused on the method development, the fourth deals with dissemination of the findings, while the fifth WP handles project management.
WP1 is focused on designing and building a platform for data collection, structuring, and storing.
WP2 is focused on developing and validating models for predicting road conditions.
WP3 develops a web-/cloud-based system for end-users (i.e., authorities and municipalities).
WP4 brings LiRA map to the potential end-users providing an interactive demo of the finalized product accessible by the end users.
Each WP consists of several tasks (Ts), milestones (Ms), and deliverables (Ds). Deadlines date (DLDs) are also provided for both deliverables and milestones.
The partners involved in LiRA project are listed below:
- P1 – The Danish Road Directorate (DRD);
- P2 – GreenMobility A/S;
- P3.1 – DTU Compute, Software engineering;
- P3.2 – DTU Compute, Cognitive Systems;
- P3.3 – DTU Byg, Geology and Geotechnics;
- P4 – Sweco Denmark A/S.
DRD leads the project and contributes to the first WP by identifying the representative road sections and performing the standard road measurements.
GreenMobility, which owns and operates the car fleet, is involved in the development of the car fleet infrastructure, data collection.
Sweco is involved in the software development which is completed within WP3 and they will lead the WP4.
Three postdocs, one from DTU byg and two from DTU compute, contribute to the first three WPs developing models, algorithms and the LiRA software architecture.
The figure below shows a flow chart of the project and connections between the work packages.

WP1 is focused on designing and building a platform for data collection, structuring, and storing. A significant sample of road sections will be identified. Data will be collected with both cars and standard equipment accounting for wide range of variables such as different drivers’ behaviour and weather conditions. The collected data will be stored in a structured database and made accessible to other parts of the system.

Start: February 1st, 2019
End: April 30th, 2022
This WP is focused on developing and validating models for predicting road conditions. In the first stage, machine learning will be applied to part of the database for training; the rest will be used for validation. Simulated sensor data from physical models will also be used for model training. The outcome of this effort is called hybrid model 1. An improved model will be offered at a later stage in the project after performing validation and after including
more car-sensor data, and more measurements over the reference sections.
WP2 Deliverables are listed below.
D2.1 Hybrid model 1 [DLD 01/2021]
D2.2 Hybrid model 2 [DLD 04/2022]
Work Package 3: Production and Validation
Partners involved (P3.1-DTU Compute/lead, P2-GreenMobility, P4-Sweco, P1-DRD).
Work package leader: Ekkart Kindler (P3.1-DTU Compute)
Key persons involved: PostDoc (P3.1-DTU Compute), Uwe Schlotz (P4-Sweco), Simon Hessner (P2-GreenMobility), Christian Axelsen (P1-DRD)
Work load: Equivalent to 3,0 FTE
Duration: 36 months
Start: February 1st, 2019
End: January 31st, 2021
In WP3 a web-/cloud-based system for end-users (i.e., authorities and municipalities) is developed. This system uses part of the infrastructure for collecting data from cars developed in WP1 and the hybrid models developed in
WP2 to collect data from cars online, and to show the road-conditions to the end-users. The design of this system and its user interface will be driven by the requirements and needs from the end-users. In addition, the system will include an online learning component, so that it keeps improving the quality of the reported data autonomously. In order to keep the development focused on the real needs of the end-user, this WP will follow an agile development, driven by user stories. This also implies that the tasks discussed below will be intertwined. To coordinate this work, a separate continuous task named Manage agile development process (T3.1) is introduced.
WP3 deliverables are listed below:
D3.1a: Requirements analysis [DLD 04/2020]
D3.1b: Prototype (see M3.1) [DLD 02/2020]
D3.2: Pre-alpha (see M3.2) [DLD 03/2020]
D3.3: Beta version (see M3.4) [DLD 03/2021]
D3.4: Release candidate (see M3.5) [DLD 12/2021]
D3.5: Specification of interfaces between data collection system and cloud platform [DLD 06/2020], revised and updated [DLD 06/2021]
Work Package 4: LiRA map Demo
